Smart Goals and Habits Worksheet
Hello to Everyone in my Coaching Communities: Solution Starter Prediabetes Program Members, 30-Day Habit-Building Clients, and the We Are Women At Wellness Community Online
Are you serious about building smart goals and habits in the year ahead?
What excites you about your goals, habits, and life today?
When we decide to pursue a goal or habit that excites us, it’s important to have a sustainable plan of action.
A sustainable plan of action — that’s the secret sauce of success. What happens when our habits or our goal-achievement efforts are not sustainable?
An easy way to answer that question is to visit gyms around America on January 10th…lots of folks find that their plan for a fit lifestyle starts to melt away in about 30 days. When we base our dreams and plans on sheer willpower instead of a well-developed process, frustration is quickly followed by the dreaded giving up.
There are many habit-building and goal-setting tools to choose from and the S.M.A.R.T. technique is a simple and popular choice. In a 1981 issue of Management Review magazine, authors George Doran, Arthur Miller, and James Cunningham introduced us to this method. I have been teaching this goal-success process for five years in Colorado, and it still motivates me and my clients today.
What does the S.M.A.R.T. acronym mean?
S: Specific details are your starting point
M: Measurable results should be identified as step two
A: Attainable habits and goals are ones that match our personality, abilities, and core values
R: Realistic habits and goals will always win over “Pie in the Sky” goals. If your big dream seems too grand, try breaking the big dream down into realistic intermediate goals.
T: Time-Based criteria are important for success. Giving ourselves a deadline is important because we all feel the difference in energy between “some day” dreams and dreams we jump out of bed to work on.
