The health care industry is making room for the educational and motivational skills of the health coach, and both the patient and her doctor are winners in this deal.
I want to share what I learned in an article in Men’s Journal by David Browne about the rise of health coaching in the US. With quotes from well-known, expert sources, like Dr. Frank Lipman and leaders at Duke Integrative Medicine, more doctors are sending patients to health coaches. People are hungry for a long-term health game plan and the consistent follow-up to make it happen.
“Most of the problems people go to their doctors for are chronic, lifestyle-related questions, and doctors don’t have the time to treat them,” says Dr. Lipman, a New York physician who uses six health coaches in his practice. “Health coaches can give patients specific recipes and hold their hands. I don’t have time to do that.”
Are you tired of feeling lost when it comes to your chronic issues? Do you believe there must be simple things you could do to improve your health and well-being to better follow your doctor’s orders? Linda Smith, the director of professional and public programs at Duke Integrative Medicine reports that “Most of us know we need to exercise more, eat better, and work more effectively with stress. But it takes a partnership to walk this walk to activate these medical recommendations.”
As a health coach, I believe that the day-to-day actions we all make have a huge impact on our lives. Incorporating simple yet powerful habits takes much of the overwhelm out of wanting to live our best life. When I was in junior high school, one of my friends had a generous mom who was teaching some of us how to sew clothes. She taught us something that I now teach all of my coaching clients. She said, “If you spend 15 minutes every day pursuing your love of sewing, you would be surprised what you can accomplish in a month’s time.”
What healthy habit do you wish you gave 15 minutes to everyday? Has your doctor recommended weight loss or increased exercise, yet you haven’t begun either effort because it feels overwhelming? I can tell you 5 simple ways to spend 15 minutes a day and begin a powerful holistic health process…feeling supported and nurtured every step of the way!
If your doctor does not give nutrition help or teach how whole food can heal your chronic health problems, perhaps you should consider speaking with a professional who has specialized in that kind of health care? Like author David Browne points out in Men’s Journal, health coaches are rising in status and impact for Americans seeking wellness. I predict that in five years, almost every doctor’s office will be able to refer a health coach to people as part of their annual check up. Perhaps today is a great day for you to get in front of this powerful trend? I would be honored to hear from you.
